These items are hazardous, regulated, or unsafe to haul in a shared truck. Please keep them out of the pile.
Wet or liquid paint, stains, paint thinner, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, and cleaning chemicals.
Gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze, brake and transmission fluid.
Propane tanks, helium or oxygen tanks, and fire extinguishers, even if they seem empty.
Live ammunition, fireworks, flares, and anything explosive.
Needles and sharps, prescription medications, and anything contaminated with bodily fluids.
Suspected asbestos materials and lead-painted debris need a licensed abatement contractor.
Vehicle batteries and loose lithium-ion batteries need battery recycling.
These items are not always a problem, but they can need special handling or carry extra fees. Call or send a note before the job so there are no surprises.
Many haulers limit tires because of recycling rules and disposal fees. Ask first.
Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners can need special handling. Tell us what you have.
Some electronics and older tube TVs need recycling rather than the landfill. Ask first.
Heavy materials can be priced differently because they are disposed of by weight.
Very heavy items like safes or large machinery may need extra help or equipment.
The City of Columbia runs a Household Hazardous Waste collection facility at 1313 Lakeview Avenue. It takes many household chemicals, including paint, pesticides, batteries, and fluorescent lights, and is typically open the first and third Saturdays from April through October, 8 a.m. to noon. Limits apply, such as a cap on the amount of paint per vehicle, and the City no longer accepts prescription drugs there, so check the City's page for current rules before you go.
Missouri law also keeps some materials out of landfills, including motor oil, lead-acid batteries, and liquid wastes like antifreeze and paint, which is why they need a proper drop-off. The Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District has more on household hazardous waste in the region.
